UNIT 2: Doing Sociology
RESEARCH METHODS
Doing Sociology: The methods of research, focusing on the nature of sociology and the method of science as it applies to sociological inquiry This multi-week unit will have students identifying and examining patters of social interaction in normal everyday life. Each student will be required to observe a real-time, live social situation five times over seven days. Taking advantage of smart phones, students will use Flickr for uploading photos of the social situation and YouTube for uploading short videos. A dedicated section of the wiki will be kept for the narrative. The students in the small group will use this information to create a mini database of the examined social situations to see if they can find larger patterns between the different observations. (Later in the semester a similar observation assignment will have students examining patterns in online social situations.)
